I am talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electronic_waste\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">E-Waste<\/a>, a vital issue both for the race against climate crisis and for the research on more ethical, inclusive and sustainable economic models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/miha4d.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/E-waste_2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miha4d.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/E-waste_2021.png 600w, https:\/\/miha4d.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/E-waste_2021-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/miha4d.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/E-waste_2021-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where does all this come from?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictworks.org\/digital-technologies-climate-change-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictworks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> ICTworks.org<\/a> website, an international community of professionals dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/miha4d.eu\/it\/ict4d\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1734\">ICT for development<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Digital technologies are part of the climate crisis problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also seems to be the most quickly growing issue, as the European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20201208STO93325\/e-waste-in-the-eu-facts-and-figures-infographic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communicates<\/a> on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many reasons causing this problem, among others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the tendency of replacing the products rather than repairing them, both on an individual and on an enterprise level;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>software upgrades that force the use of higher performance hardware, sometimes called \u2018planned obsolescence\u2019;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>problems related to the high consumption of electricity required by the raising number of connected items, together with the amount of data we are continually saving \u2018in the cloud\u2019, which let\u2019s admit, too often include emails and data not archived, hundreds of photos, selfies and videos that we will never have the time to watch again \u2026 and who knows how many other things forgotten \u2018online\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this already increasing problem, pushing businesses, families and institutions to adapt to remote activities, like smart working and online schooling, mostly by buying new products.<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252492372\/Covid-19-shift-to-remote-working-adds-to-Earths-growing-e-waste-problem?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The uptick in remote working-related IT kit purchases caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has sparked concerns over how\u2026<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Europe do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20201208STO93325\/e-waste-in-the-eu-facts-and-figures-infographic\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> is monitoring<\/a> the problem and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2018In February 2021, the Parliament adopted a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-9-2021-0040_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> resolution<\/a> on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20210128STO96607\/how-the-eu-wants-to-achieve-a-circular-economy-by-2050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> new circular economy action plan<\/a> demanding additional measures to achieve a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable, toxic-free and fully circular economy by 2050, including tighter recycling rules and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20210204IPR97114\/circular-economy-meps-call-for-tighter-eu-consumption-and-recycling-rules\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> binding targets for materials use and consumption<\/a> by 2030.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several running projects tackling the circular economy models. One is the <a href=\"https:\/\/reflowproject.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reflow project<\/a> for which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dyne.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dyne.org<\/a> is developing new free and open source software tools to create and manage a <a href=\"https:\/\/reflowos.dyne.org\/docs\/generate_a_material_passport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Material passport\u2019<\/a> of reusable assets: a sort of digital passport for materials used in different sectors, which will facilitate the transparency and efficiency of the production processes along with the recovery and reuse of the resources.<a href=\"https:\/\/reflowproject.eu\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/reflowproject.eu\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REFLOW &#8211; Co-creating circular and regenerative resource flows in cities<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reflowproject.eu\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Co-creating circular and regenerative resource flows in cities REFLOW is an EU H2020 funded project that seeks to\u2026<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the ambitious plan dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/priorities-2019-2024\/european-green-deal_en\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Green Deal<\/a>, the number of projects and solutions funded to face these challenges will continue to grow while we are already in an emergency situation and we must all act immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can we do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each of us can try to understand more about the problem, the possible solutions and also understand how to change habits, because have no doubt: the decisions we make as users and consumers (sometimes called \u2018vote with your wallet\u2019, meaning through the choice of the purchase) influence companies and legislators, as the adoption of the \u201crepairability index\u201d law in France demonstrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an individual level, one of the most well-known online petitions demanding \u2018the Right to Repair\u2019 can be sign both as citizens and as organizations :<a href=\"https:\/\/repair.eu\/join-the-campaign-2\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/repair.eu\/join-the-campaign-2\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Join the campaign &#8211; Right to Repair Europe<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/repair.eu\/join-the-campaign-2\/?source=post_page-----8c52fd7b5530---------------------------------------\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Thank you for your interest in getting involved in the Right to Repair European campaign! Membership is open to groups\u2026<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a local level, before deciding to replace a product one can look for different options such as repair and reuse courses or search for small local stores that can fix the items. The <a href=\"https:\/\/therestartproject.org\/parties\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Restart project<\/a> organizes \u2018parties\u2019 all over Europe where one can bring the broken products and try to repair them, guided by trained volunteers. They are also continually looking for new hosts for these parties that can be local bars or local organizations. The project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refurbish.ninja\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Refurbish Ninja<\/a> goes beyond recycling to teach youngs and adults how to repair and refurbish devices. And if you look around yourself you may find one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could be a way to support the local economy and at the same time show more respect to the Planet and to the future generations.
